ILO Brief

ILO’s work on migration in Asia and the Pacific

The governance of labour migration is of core importance to the ILO. Much of the international migration occurring today is propelled by the search for decent work. The centrality of work to migration flows in the context of Asia and the Pacific is clear.

Focus areas for the ILO in 2024–25 in the region include protecting the rights of women and men migrant workers including on fair recruitment working conditions; skills development and recognition; climate resilience, and strengthening regional cooperation.

ILO technical support is provided to governments, workers organizations and the private sector in the form policy advice and legislative review based on International Labour Standards, capacity building and training, research and sharing of good practices, facilitating support services for migrant workers and promoting regional cooperation. One of the main vehicles for ILO work are development cooperation projects funded by the governments of Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United States and the UN.
