The Mwakuri Aika a Raraoi Ibukimi 2 Activity (MARI 2 Activity) is a project led by the ILO Office for Pacific Island Countries, focusing on worker protection and family resilience in the Republic of Kiribati. The project is funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation and will run from February 2024 to September 2027.
The project aims to support the Kiribati Ministry of Employment and Human Resource (MEHR), the Kiribati Institute of Technology (KIT), the Kiribati Trade Union Congress (KTUC), and the Kiribati Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). It will assist MEHR, overseas workers and their families, and organizations advocating for overseas workers in addressing worker rights and family needs before, during, and after deployment to overseas opportunities.
The MARI 2 Activity consists of three sub-activities:
Sub-activity 2.1: Aims to equip workers to exercise their rights during overseas work by strengthening the institutional capacity of the MEHR and linking aspiring, existing, and returnee overseas workers, and members of their families, to the services required to understand and exercise their rights. This includes the establishment of Kiribati’s first Overseas Workers Resource Centre (OWRC).
Sub-activity 2.2: Focuses on equipping workers and their families to manage the impacts of overseas work through pre-departure training.
Sub-activity 2.3: Facilitates and strengthens reintegration support for returnee overseas workers and their families, ensuring that benefits from labour migration are sustainable.
The ILO will also lead the implementation of measures detailed in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Risk Management Plan, in coordination with Project partners. For more information, please refer to the Kiribati Threshold Program MCC webpage.
