Return and reintegration

Returning to a country of origin after migration or displacement can bring significant social and economic challenges. Time spent abroad may weaken personal and professional networks, while changes in the labour market can make it difficult to find suitable work and rebuild a livelihood.

These challenges are often greater where employment is scarce, working conditions are poor or institutions lack the resources to provide effective services. People returning unexpectedly or in large numbers, including to fragile contexts, may be particularly vulnerable to unemployment, poverty, informal or under-regulated work, and further migration or displacement.

Yet return can also bring opportunities. Migrant workers and refugees may come back with new skills, experience, knowledge and entrepreneurial capacity that can benefit local economies. Policies that promote decent work and economic opportunities for both those returning and the communities receiving them can help turn return into lasting reintegration and contribute to wider development.
