Energy generation
Energy generation powers economies, industries, and communities worldwide. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global energy sector added nearly 2.5 million jobs in 2023, bringing total employment to over 67 million people. Notably, clean energy sectors alone accounted for 1.5 million of those new jobs in 2023, while fossil-fuel employment grew by about 940,000.
As the sector evolves toward cleaner and more sustainable sources, especially renewables, it offers growing opportunities for skills development, gender equality and decent work. The ILO promotes policies and practices that make the shift toward sustainable energy generation inclusive, fair, and job-rich. This includes advancing decent work across traditional and emerging energy industries — from fossil fuels and power utilities to renewable energy technologies.
