About the project

• Background

  Indonesia is known as one of the world’s biggest producers and exporter of coal which has significantly contributed to its economic growth by providing jobs opportunities and revenue to the government. Besides a coal exporting country, Indonesia is currently dependent on coal for domestic consumption to supply electricity throughout the many islands across the archipelago.
  
  Coal has also brought environmental concerns as coal mining is associated a range of environmental issues such as water and air pollution, land degradation and emission of greenhouse gases. Indonesia has acknowledged the importance to transition itself away from coal to a more sustainable and cleaner source of energy. That said, at the international stage, the Government of Indonesia has committed to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060.
  
  One of the ILO's efforts is to support Indonesia by accelerating just energy transitions (JET) away from coal to renewable energy and other sustainable economic activities by supporting to develop plans for a just transition away from coal to renewable energy and other sustainable economic activities with a focus in the regional level. The IKI-JET project will work in East Kalimantan and South Sumatra.

• IKI-JET in Indonesia

  The ILO as part of a consortium is implementing the Just Energy Transition project (IKI-JET) with the objective to support the transition away from a coal based, unsustainable energy system towards a low carbon and climate resilient energy system is accelerated through a just transition and inclusive and sustainable economic growth is supported, with new and productive employment opportunities and decent work for all.
  
  Furthermore, the IKI-JET project will provide intensive support for social dialogue, stakeholders engagement, innovation, employment and labour policies as well as energy transition processes. Furthermore, it is expected that the project could create an enabling environment to spur accelerated action and advance coal related just energy transition in the provinces by informing, supporting, and encouraging relevant policy discussion and formulation at the provincial and national level.
  
  The project will work closely with the tripartite and other relevant partners at the national and provincial level through a robust social dialogue approach. It is expected the project would:

  1. Strengthen the capacity of the project stakeholders at the national and local levels on Just Energy Transition.
  2. Establish a regional consultation forum to allow stakeholders to address challenges and take forward opportunities of Just Energy Transition.
  3. Encourage policy formulation and planning for an economic transformation as a result of the Just Energy Transition within the targeted project areas.
