Indonesia’s electronics sector to pilot responsible business conduct initiative

CIKARANG, West Java, Indonesia (ILO News) - To promote responsible business conduct in the electronics sector in Indonesia, the ILO teamed up with the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) and the Industrial Park in Cikarang, West Java, organizing a workshop to raise the awareness about international business and human rights standards as well as the evolving national regulations.

Held on 19 August, the workshop was attended by key representatives of electronics enterprises in the BEFA/MN2100 Industrial Park in which they actively involved a long-day session of presentations, group works and interactive discussions on the implementation of responsible business conduct at the enterprise level.

The pilot initiative plays an important role in underscoring the need for ongoing commitment to responsible business conduct in the electronics sector, particularly at the enterprise level.

The workshop presented key speakers from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights who highlighted the self-assessment tool of PRISMA and the Ministry of Manpower who guided the participants on the Guide of Norm 100. The Ministries have been designed these tools to help businesses benchmark their standards with national and international standards.

During the group works, the participants identified challenges and opportunities they faced to implement responsible business at the enterprise level. They also underscored the importance of utilizing existing social dialogue mechanisms for human rights due diligence.

The workshop concluded with the commitment from the participating enterprises to conduct a pilot responsible business conduct initiative at the enterprise level. “The pilot initiative plays an important role in underscoring the need for ongoing commitment to responsible business conduct in the electronics sector, particularly at the enterprise level,” said Myra Hanartani, Apindo’s Committee Chair of Regulation and Institutional Relations for Employment.

The ILO supported the initiative through its Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Supply Chains Asia (RISSC) Project, funded by the Government of Japan-Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and the Skills Development and Responsible Business Conduct Project in Indonesia, funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
