Green Jobs and Just Transition in the Arab States
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region issues of heat stress, pollution, land degradation, food security, access to water, electricity, and energy are some of the climate and environment-related threats to jobs, livelihoods, the economy and the private sector across the region.
Meanwhile, a transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies presents both challenges and opportunities. A just transition in the MENA region is not just a shift to greener economies; it's a comprehensive transformation of labour markets, economies and societal structures. ILO data suggests that 10 million jobs can be created in the region with ambitious climate action and industrial policies.
The Regional Office for Arab States supports ILO tripartite constituents in fostering a just transition that maximizes economic and social opportunities, promotes decent work creation and advances social justice - while carefully managing challenges in the context of the ecological transition. Initiatives include supporting constituents across the decent work and just transition agenda, for example with promoting social dialogue, green job creation, sustainable enterprise creation, occupational safety and health, and the integration of decent work priorities in climate and environmental policies.
