The ILO advances the right to a safe and healthy working environment for all mineworkers through the promotion of the Safety and Health in Mines Convention, 1995 (No. 176) and the implementation of the Codes of Practice on safety and health in underground coalmines and opencast mines.

Women in mining constitute less than a fifth of the estimated 21.4 million people that work in the hyper-masculine industry. The ILO meeting on women for a more inclusive mining future in Africa agreed concrete actions to promote gender equality in both large and small-scale mining.

Critical Minerals

Critical minerals are essential for energy transition and key industries. Rising demand drives growth and jobs, but creates risks in labor, governance, and environment, requiring sustainable supply chains and strong worker protections.
