Mining

The ILO advances the right to a safe and healthy working environment for all mineworkers through the promotion of the Safety and Health in Mines Convention, 1995 (No. 176) and the implementation of the Codes of Practice on safety and health in underground coalmines and opencast mines.

Women in mining constitute less than a fifth of the estimated 21.4 million people that work in the hyper-masculine industry. The ILO meeting on women for a more inclusive mining future in Africa agreed concrete actions to promote gender equality in both large and small-scale mining.

The bar charts show global and regional point estimates at the sectoral level, based on data from the ILO Harmonized Microdata collection. These estimates cannot be directly compared across different periods and may be updated as new information becomes available. The estimates provided and published by the ILO may differ from those produced and released at the national level.
