Decent work across the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus

More countries are experiencing fragility, conflict and violence than at any time in the past three decades. The interlinked nature of conflict, climate change, food insecurity, resource scarcity, terrorism, disasters, and forced displacement requires multidimensional thinking and integrated, evidence-based strategies that equally embrace inclusion and innovation.

In this context, for interventions to be sustainable, the Humanitarian–Development–Peace Nexus (HDPN) provides a framework within which humanitarian response, development, and peacebuilding involve close collaboration, drawing on the comparative advantages of actors in each area. This helps ensure that immediate crisis response, longer-term recovery, and peace efforts are better aligned and mutually reinforcing.

Within this framework, the ILO, while not a humanitarian organization, plays an important role through its Decent Work Agenda. Employment, decent working conditions, and social dialogue are key contributions to resilience and peace. In collaboration with tripartite constituents, international and national partners, and other stakeholders, the ILO promotes decent work and social justice as drivers of stability, helping to address the underlying factors of fragility that make societies and economies vulnerable to external shocks.

This Knowledge Portal brings together evidence, tools, and practical experiences to support stakeholders in designing and implementing integrated approaches that strengthen resilience, promote decent work, and contribute to sustainable peace in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
