MANILA – The International Labour Organization (ILO) has announced the winners of its global media competition, in which two out of four winning stories came from the Philippines.
The 2017 Global Media Competition on Labour Migration (GMCLM) encourages and recognizes exemplary media coverage on labour migration and fair recruitment of migrant workers.
The ILO received over 350 entries from 73 countries around the world. An independent panel composed of four prominent media judges selected the four winning stories.
The Philippines tops the Fair Recruitment theme, both in the written article and media production categories, which were published by Rappler as special reports.
The winners were officially announced on International Migrants Day, 18 December. The ILO Country Office for the Philippines will hold a local awarding ceremony on 17 January 2018 to recognize contributions of Filipino journalists in reporting on labour migration and fair recruitment.
“Having information access on safe and fair migration options is crucial. Journalists play a key role in promoting labour migration as a choice and ensuring fair recruitment of migrant workers,” said Director Khalid Hassan of the ILO Country Office for the Philippines.
The awards were attributed in collaboration with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Equal Times, Solidarity Center, Human Rights Watch, Migrant Forum in Asia, the International Federation of Journalists (IF) and the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC/ILO).
The ILO’s international labour standards protect migrant workers and can help prevent discrimination and xenophobia while promoting a fair and effective governance of labour migration. The ILO encourages all member States to ratify and implement these instruments as a means to support their commitments under the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2017 GMCLM also contributes to the United Nations (UN) TOGETHER campaign, which encourages global action by promoting non-discrimination and addressing the problem of rising xenophobia against refugees and migrants. The campaign will run until the end of 2018.
