ILO launches the Global SCORE Trainer Network
On June 28th, the ILO established a global network of trainers and consultants who assist SMEs in developing and emerging economies. The launch event included a webinar on tips and tricks to engage lead buyers in SME development.

The new Global SCORE Trainer Network offers business trainers and consultants opportunities to learn about new trends in SME development and to continuously upgrade their skills as demands from businesses for services are rapidly changing. Most of the trainers in the new network have participated in ILO trainings to support SMEs to improve productivity and working conditions. By offering services to SMEs at high quality, trainers can maintain previously earned certification as ILO SCORE Trainers.
As part of the launch, the ILO SCORE Programme organized a webinar on tips and tricks for engaging lead buyers. The event supported trainers and consultants to win financial support from lead buyers and donors for SME supplier development. It focused on establishing a platform for continuous learning and facilitated discussions and exchange of ideas between SCORE trainers from different countries.
At the webinar, Jeff Kristianto – SCORE expert trainer from Business Export Development Organization in Indonesia, Hernan Zeballos – former SCORE coordinator in Peru, and Nesrine Kammoun – SCORE trainer from OSH Institute of the Tunisian Ministry of Social Affairs shared their experience with engaging lead buyers and donors. The webinar also featured two experts from MDF Training and Consultancy – Zoe Lawson and Michelle de Rijck.
Rather than using a “one size fits all” approach, the panelists encouraged participants to be flexible in adapting SCORE Training modules to SME and lead buyer priorities, and provided practical strategies to approach the different stages of donor and CSR funding. They also recommended collaborating with governments, trade unions and employers’ organizations, organizing regular meetings and test trainings, preparing a clear business case for companies with attention to KPIs, and going beyond traditional methods to promote SCORE Training for sustainable partnerships (for example, outside the ILO network, on social media etc.).
The Global SCORE Trainer Network is part of ILO’s sustainability strategy to promote SCORE Training as an important tool to advancing SME productivity and working conditions at a scale beyond the immediate SCORE Programme. To this end, it will conduct regular webinars and virtual events to effectively employ knowledge and experiences of SCORE trainers and experts from different regions, continuously improve their skills in line with the changing world of work, and coordinate efforts to advance productivity improvement and decent work for all.
Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) is an ILO global programme that improves productivity and working conditions in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The key intervention of the programme is SCORE Training, which combines practical classroom training with in-factory consulting. The ILO is currently implementing SCORE Training in 4 countries – Bolivia, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Tunisia. At the same time, SCORE Trainings are continuing in an additional 15+ countries, thanks to the ILO-certified SCORE Trainers and Expert Trainers network.

For example, a lead buyer from Canada was interested in promoting cleaner production, so I recommended only Workplace Cooperation and Resource Efficiency modules in place of the entire SCORE module package in order to tailor SCORE Training to their requirement.”

“Lead buyers are interested in different things depending on the sector, context and government policies in place. Choose your time wisely. If you approach a certain lead buyer, make sure that they are the right fit, so you don’t lose proposals from the get-go.”
