This project contributes to improving the living standards of workers and their families by designing consensus-based roadmaps for the operationalization of living wages at national, sector, and company level, with a focus on key sourcing countries of Unilever, while ensuring the sustainability of enterprises.
Strategic Framework
Developing living wage estimates in line with ILO principles and providing access to a global wage data hub to support evidence-based wage-setting processes in Unilever sourcing countries.
Intervention results:
1.1. Living wage estimates, developed through robust methodologies aligned with ILO principles, are available to inform wage-setting processes in intervention countries.
1.2. National constituents and Unilever stakeholders use a global wage data hub to access reliable, up-to-date wage data, including living wage estimates and economic factors, to make informed decisions on adequate wages.
Building the capacity of governments and social partners to integrate living wages into national wage-setting mechanisms, including minimum wage systems and collective bargaining frameworks, and improving compliance with statutory and negotiated wages.
Intervention results:
2.1. Wage-setting institutions are strengthened to operationalize living wages in a nationally anchored and sustainable way, taking into account both workers' and families' needs and economic factors.
2.2. ILO constituents have improved capacity to consider workers' needs alongside economic factors in wage-setting mechanisms, and compliance with minimum and bargained wages is improved.
Supporting the establishment of an enabling environment for sustainable enterprises and wage growth, through research, capacity building on productivity and formalization, and awareness-raising on the structural challenges of low pay.
Intervention results:
3.1. Root causes and challenges of low pay, including informality, low productivity, and unequal distribution of value, are identified and addressed, creating conditions that enable higher wages.
3.2. Constituents and stakeholders have improved capacity on skills development, productivity improvement, and transition to the formal economy to promote wage growth.
Facilitating exchange and consensus-building among ILO constituents and living wage initiatives, including Unilever's, to develop shared roadmaps for operationalizing living wages, in alignment with ILO principles.
Intervention results:
4.1. Living wage and income initiatives, including Unilever's, operate in alignment with ILO principles for estimating and operationalizing living wages.
4.2. Shared roadmaps for the operationalization of living wages are developed through consensus among constituents and living wage initiatives at national, sector, and/or company level.
