Decent work and labour rights in Southern Africa’s construction sector

Project implementation strategy

• Country level (South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe)

  Targeting key “systemic failures” in the construction sector which leave the majority of workers with insufficient labour rights: including low wages, unsafe and precarious working conditions, and poor contract stability. In collaboration with governments, the private sector, and the social partners (trade unions and employer’s organisations), the project will pilot a portfolio of interventions with to; a) demonstrate impact and draw lessons that can be shared with SADC members; b) establish the construction sector labour rights and productivity.

• Sub-regional level

  The Project will work with the SADC Secretariat to leverage knowledge, experience, good practice, and lessons gained through country level interventions implementation to identify, inform, develop guidance for supporting delivery of systemic policy and regulatory changes to improve labour rights in the SADC construction sector. This is the key and route to ensuring that the project interventions result in sustained sub-regional impact at scale.
