Advancing responsible business and decent work in Indonesia: Dialogues on project governance, core labour standards, and academic partnerships

Following the half-day national tripartite forum, the Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Supply Chains Asia (RISSC) in Indonesia Project convenes a three-part event series aimed at strengthening responsible business practices and advancing decent work in Indonesia. Bringing together representatives from government, employers’ and workers’ organizations, academia, and development partners, the series promotes dialogue, knowledge exchange, and strategic collaboration across key stakeholders.

The first session is the Project Advisory Committee (PAC) Meeting, providing strategic guidance, reviewing progress, and reinforcing institutional partnerships. The second session explores Responsible Business Conduct (RBC), core labour standards, and the critical role of trade unions in promoting compliance, social dialogue, and accountability in supply chains. And the third session focuses on Business and Human Rights and the development of university networks, highlighting the importance of academic engagement in bridging research, policy, and practice to advance decent work in global supply chains.

Together, these interconnected events aim to strengthen policy coherence, foster multi-stakeholder engagement, and support sustainable and inclusive economic development grounded in fundamental principles and rights at work.

The Project Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting for the RISSC project is a crucial governance body that includes stakeholders to provide strategic guidance and ensure alignment with priorities.

The meeting's objectives are to review the project's progress in Indonesia's electronics sector, validate key recommendations from the National Dialogue on Responsible and Sustainable Electronics Supply Chains, enhance tripartite collaboration, and plan for the sustainability and scalability of project outcomes.

Key discussions will cover the implementation of the project, findings from the ILO synthesis report, prioritization of actions addressing decent work challenges, improving social dialogue, and exploring strategies for integrating successful outcomes into national policies.
Responsible business conduct (RBC) in Indonesia seeks to ensure businesses respect human rights and environmental sustainability, in alignment with national policies and international commitments. Despite advancements, challenges remain in decent work conditions, particularly in the electronics sector, characterized by low wages and gender inequality.

Trade unions and the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) are crucial for promoting RBC, advocating workers' rights and monitoring compliance.

A half-day discussion aims to review core labour standards in high-risk sectors, strengthen trade union roles, enhance Komnas HAM's mandate, foster multi-stakeholder collaboration, and develop recommendations for integrating human rights due diligence into national policies.

The seminar aims to establish a collaborative, interdisciplinary university network focused on addressing deficits in decent work as per the ILO MNE Declaration and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Key objectives include examining pressing decent work challenges in sectors like manufacturing and agriculture, mapping existing academic initiatives, agreeing on the network's vision, and identifying founding member institutions to draft a roadmap for its launch.

Expected outputs are a shared understanding of decent work priorities, a draft framework for the network's structure, a list of founding institutions, and a clear timeline for development.
