Transport (civil aviation, railways, road), ports and logistics

Transport is a crucial driver of social and economic development. Investments and gross domestic product expenditure in this sector are important, as it ensures mobility and trade. Transport subsectors - road, railways and civil aviation - employ many workers in a wide range of job categories. The ILO provides a tailored approach through numerous decent work strategies to ensure the sector’s resilience and sustainability. Main efforts include promoting social dialogue, workplace occupational safety and health, workforce gender balance, improving working conditions, and analysis of employment relationships and their impact on decent work. Sectoral transport work is closely coordinated with maritime sector activities (ports, shipping, inland waterways, fishing).

Data and statistics

The line graphs show a time series of modelled global and regional employment estimates at the sectoral level. The ILO modelled estimates generally cover 189 countries, offering a comprehensive set of internationally comparable labour statistics. These include both reported data and imputed figures for countries with missing information. The imputations are generated using econometric models developed by the ILO.

For more detailed labour market indicators and country-level data, visit the Sectoral Employment Statistics page of the ILOSTAT database.
