SCORE Phase IV participates in the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2022 event to promote Bolivia’s food heritage through a decent work lens

La Paz – With the aim of raising awareness and to promote the reactivation and sustainable development of strategic value chains in Bolivia through a decent work lens, the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) SCORE Phase IV project , is joining forces with the Bolivian Food and Gastronomic Integration Movement (MIGA) and the Hub of the 4 Magnificent Andeans (HUB4MA) to participate in the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2022 event to be held in the city of Turin, Italy from 22 to 26 September 2022.

The delegation from ILO, MIGA and HUB4MA has planned a series of advocacy initiatives to showcase the value of productive activities linked to Bolivia's food heritage, with emphasis on four high-value Andean grains: quinoa, tarwi, cañahua and amaranth.

“Quinoa, tarwi, cañahua and amaranth species are the living representation of our Andean identity. They have earned the title of the Magnificent Andeans for several of their characteristics that not only make them superfoods, but also the greatest capacity to adapt to extreme environmental conditions and resilience to climate change in the production systems of the Altiplano and Valleys of our country.

HUB4MA, 2021

Terra Madre Salone del Gusto is an international event dedicated to food policies, sustainable agriculture and the environment. The participation of the ILO MIGA and HUB4MA delegation will contribute to fostering better links among family production units, processors and lead buyers, which in turn can lead to the opening of markets for these four Andean grains, and the improvement of productivity and working conditions.

“To showcase Bolivia's gastronomic heritage and how micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) have managed to survive in the face of the COVID-19 crisis is a way of paying tribute to Bolivia's producers, and also an entry point to help us rethink how the country's food systems work.

The actions carried out to strengthen SMEs in the Andean grains sector are part of SCORE Phase IV (2022-23) in Bolivia, which will focus on:

• Strengthening opportunities to achieve sustainability of SCORE Training in Bolivia and its integration into the local economic development framework.
• Increasing the links of SMEs in priority sectors with international markets through integrated strategies that include gender-sensitive and enterprise formalization interventions.
