German mission visits Deir Alla nursery project under the Employment Intenstve Investment Programme (EIIP)

Deir Alla, Jordan (ILO News) - A delegation from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) visited the Deir Alla nursery project, one of six vital sites under the afforestation component of the Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP). The programme is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan and funded by the German government, through KfW Development Bank. EIIP aims to generate income through short-term, decent employment for vulnerable groups while enhancing environmental sustainability. The programme also focuses on equipping young Jordanians and Syrians with essential skills, facilitating their access to long-term employment opportunities.

During the visit, BMZ representatives were introduced to the nursery's impressive achievements, including the preparation of 150,000 seedlings, which are crucial for the region's reforestation and environmental preservation. The Deir Alla nursery project has distinguished itself by promoting inclusivity in the workforce, with 55% of the workers being women and 11% being persons with disabilities. This focus on diversity aligns with the EIIP’s broader goals of creating equitable employment opportunities that benefit all segments of the society.

Dr. Svea Burmester, Senior Policy Officer, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, highlighted “As part of our ongoing commitment to financing climate-friendly and sustainable initiatives, German Financial Cooperation through KfW Development Bank is proud to contribute to the Kingdom’s 10 Million Trees project. Here in Deir Alla, thanks to our sound partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, important progress is being made in promoting the inclusion of women and persons with disabilities in green jobs. This project highlights the great potential of promoting environmental restoration, economic inclusion, and livelihood support, through an integrated approach of sustainable development."

The current EIIP afforestation activities, including two nurseries, are implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO). Beyond supporting the livelihoods of vulnerable people, the programme also contributes significantly to Jordan’s National Afforestation Plan, which aims to restore the country’s green cover and to improve environmental conditions.

Since 2016, the German Federal Ministry has supported the Jordanian Government through EIIP in response to the Syrian crisis. By creating short-term employment, improving infrastructure, and providing relevant skills and training, the programme has become a cornerstone of Jordan’s efforts to enhance the resilience and economic opportunities of both Syrian refugees and within host communities.

Dr. Mahmoud Al Rabie, Ministry of Agriculture reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to fostering national capacity through the successful implementation of labour-based technologies. He highlighted that these initiatives are not only pivotal for accelerating sustainable economic growth but also integral to the government's strategy to reduce poverty and advance social justice throughout Jordan. Dr. Al Rabie emphasized that the Ministry views these efforts as a cornerstone of Jordan's long-term development and a key driver in enhancing self-reliance and resilience across the nation.
