Launch of the "Excellence" Award: An Important Step to Empower the Voices of Female Teachers in the Private Education Sector in Jordan

AMMAN (ILO News) - The "Stand Up with the Teacher" campaign in partnership with the Decent Work for Women Programme in Jordan launched the “Excellence” Award through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ten private schools from five governorates: Amman, Zarqa, Ajloun, Irbid and Balqa.
The "Excellence” award is intended to recognize schools that prioritize the rights and well-being of teachers in the private education sector. By promoting fair treatment, professional development, and a positive learning environment, the award aims to improve education quality and elevate the status of teachers. It serves as a model for other schools to follow and encourages a stronger commitment to teacher rights. The MoU was signed at an event organized by the ILO, and it was attended by a representative of the Embassy of Norway, representatives from private schools, and campaign coordinators.
Reem Aslan, ILO Arab States gender specialist with the Decent Work for Women Programme, welcomed participants to the signing event. She emphasized the importance of committing to the MOU in order to safeguard the rights of teachers and promote gender equality through electronic salary transfers and social security coverage.
During the Launching Ceremony, Nareman Al-Shawaheen, one of the campaign coordinators, delivered a brief presentation about the "Stand Up with the Teacher" campaign, highlighting its establishment in 2015 under the umbrella of the Jordanian Committee for Pay Equity (NCPE) in collaboration with the ILO and Ahel Organization for Community Organizing. The campaign aims to promote the rights of teachers in the private education sector, ensuring fair wages while focusing on building their capacities and skills in education. This is achieved through the provision of training programs that encompass legal awareness, educational technology, teaching methods, and skills development.
The event also included a presentation on the “Excellence” Award pathway by the campaign coordinators providing an opportunity for schools intending to sign MoUs to express their opinions on the steps to be followed and address any queries they may have. These MoUs will formalize a commitment and collaboration between the schools and the “Stand Up with Teachers” campaign to promote the rights of teachers in the private education sector. By signing the MoUs, the schools are indicating their willingness to adhere to certain principles, criteria, and initiatives outlined by the campaign and its partners. It was emphasized that the award selection process will be based on specific and transparent criteria, ultimately enhancing the status of teachers in these schools, and raising the quality of education they provide.
It is worth mentioning that these MOUs reflect the commitment and shared values of the "Stand Up with the Teacher" campaign and the schools in promoting a productive and harmonious learning environment.
