International Workshop on Industrial Revolution 4.0.: Labour Market Prospects
From 28 to 31 May 2018 the city of Ufa, capital of Bashkortostan, hosted an international workshop for active trade unionists of the Russian Union of Industrial Workers entitled Industrial revolution 4.0.: Labour Market Prospects.

Taking part in the workshop were 39 trade unionists representing 12 territorial trade union associations, as well as ministry officials and representatives of the related trade unions of Bashkortostan who were interested in the workshop agenda.
The workshop featured welcoming addressed by Lenara Ivanova, Bashkortostan’s Minister for the Family, Labour and Social Protection of the Population, and Valery Apokin, Deputy Chair of the Trade Union Federation of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
Gocha Aleksandria, Specialist in Workers’ Activities at the ILO Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, made a presentation on the Labour Market trends: Key Challenges and Trade Union Responses.
Ramiro Pizarro, manager of the ILO project “Partnerships for Youth Employment in the Commonwealth of Independent States”, entitled his presentations: “Youth employment, future of work and industrial revolution” and “Promotion of youth employment: Russian and international experience”. He explained how the Future of Work, the Industrial Revolution and the Youth Employment are interconnected. The technological changes and the new industrial revolution is influencing the employment relationship and expanding non-atypical form of works, which increases vulnerability of the young people entering into the labour market. The presentation gave the opportunity to discuss in depth about the Trade Union’s opportunities to engage with different youth employment initiatives.
The young unionists participated in the seminar very actively. The problems and challenges they are facing on the workplaces in the heavy industry have commonalities among regions, the major ones being low wages, need for better professional development and promotion system, insufficiently attractive vocational education system, need for modernized system of apprenticeship, lack of incentives and prospects for future professional career.
On the positive side they put the opportunities which their unions provide to young workers by allowing them active participation in trade union activities, support in making sure the professional promotion schemes are extended to young workers in a fair and objective manner
As areas of interest for future training and exchanges, the participants named the Trade Unions role in dealing with nonstandard or atypical form of employments triggered by the technological change, and workers’ rights in global supply chains.
Young people concerns’ about the future of work, the active involvement of young workers in trade union decision making and social dialogue at all levels, as much as Trade Union’s youth employment promotion will be included in ACTRAV activities that will be implemented in Russia.
