ILO launches new project on occupational safety and health in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT (ILO News) – On 12 December 2024, the International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the project “Improving Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Systems in Uzbekistan” during a roundtable discussion in Tashkent. Supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the initiative aligns with Uzbekistan’s Decent Work Country Programme and is implemented under the ILO’s flagship programme, Safety + Health for All.

The project aims to strengthen labour inspection systems, improve occupational safety and health (OSH), and foster a preventive safety culture through enhanced legislation, capacity-building initiatives, and collaborative partnerships among the constituents.

A key milestone of the launch event was the introduction of the draft National OSH Profile and the establishment of an OSH Council. This council, comprising leading companies in Uzbekistan, is set to promote preventive safety practices across supply chains.

Further discussions on Uzbekistan’s OSH priorities took place on 15 January 2025 during a roundtable organized by the Ministry of Poverty Reduction and Employment. Participants, including representatives from the National Commission on Combating Human Trafficking and Decent Work Issues, the Federation of Trade Unions, the Confederation of Employers, and members of academia and the public, discussed the draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers on “Measures to Further Improve Occupational Safety.” This draft, currently under public review, outlines the approval of the OSH development concept and the draft National Programme for the Further Improvement of OSH for 2025–2027.
