“I have a Magister Management degree and had previously experienced working in the contractor and trading company. However, after losing my job three years ago, it is difficult for me to find a new job,” said Asep who is born with a hearing impairment.

While looking for a new job, he is now continuing his family’s business dealing with rental of wedding decoration and equipment. “Unfortunately, the offered jobs are only available for job seekers under 40 years old. But I will keep trying as I really wish I can re-enter the workforce,” he added.

A similar story was also shared by M. Baihaqi, who travelled by bus from Surabaya, East Java, to learn more about the UN agencies in Indonesia and to look for available employment opportunities. “I worked as an administration officer at the financing company. My working contract just came to an end. I am now looking for any available opportunities,” said Baihaqi who has a physical disability.

A total of 204 people with disabilities participated at the HR Session on Disability. Not only persons with disabilities, organizations deal with disability issues also attended the HR Session to develop a partnership with the UN agencies in promoting inclusivity in the country.

Tendy Gunawan, ILO’s Programme Officer for Inclusivity, stated that as the leading agency on disability and inclusivity, the ILO continues promoting the rights of persons with disabilities to decent employment and the creation of inclusive workplaces in the country. Therefore, in terms of the recruitment selection process, he hoped that it should be based on age, type of disability, gender and so forth.

“To reach inclusive world of work in the country, the recruitment selection process should be based on the capabilities and skills owned by persons with disabilities. Job and occupation should also not be compartmentalized based on their disability, but rather working to eliminate barriers in the workplace so everyone could work to their best ability,” he remarked.

The HR session was followed by a workshop with organizations for/of persons with disabilities and UN Agencies. The workshop aimed to discuss how the UN Agencies could meaningfully involve persons with disabilities in their work as well as facilitate the involvement of persons with disabilities in policy and programme making by the government.

In addition, to promote inclusive world of work, the ILO has been acted as the secretariat of the Indonesia Business and Disability Network (IBDN). As part of the ILO’s Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN), the IBDN encourages companies to be members of the IBDN and be part of the global and national movement towards inclusive workplaces.
