ILO joins debate on the platformisation of work
The ILO participated in a panel discussion on the “Platformis ation of Work” at the European Parliament. Speakers indicated a clear need for action to improve working conditions on the platforms.

At an event on the “Platformisation of Work” in the European Parliament, Janine Berg, ILO Senior Economist and Labour Market Specialist, presented the online platform economy as a transnational phenomenon with a wide margin for improvement.
She described how working conditions in the sector can be improved by boosting social dialogue, transparency, work efficiency, career prospects and social security, as illustrated by the ILO’s recent publication on “Digital labour platforms and the future of work”.
This message was seconded by MEP Joachim Schuster, according to whom we cannot shape digitalization without social protection, meanwhile stressing that the ‘platformisation’ of work may be an opportunity to formalise informal work.
Ms Berg underlined the importance of the EU Member States’ contribution to boosting the regulatory framework. According to her, the harmonization of employment protection is a slow but feasible process, and also the key determinant for upholding legal certainty for workers in the platform economy.
The ILO, MEPs and academics identified the regulatory framework, social security and social dialogue as the three main pillars to ensure a fair transition towards new forms of work.
