Ghana ratifies the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188)

GENEVA (ILO News) - On 28 August 2024, the Government of Ghana deposited with the International Labour Office (ILO) the instrument of ratification of the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188). Ghana becomes the 22nd country to ratify this Convention.

Fisheries play an important role in Ghana's economy, both in providing employment and contributing to food security. Mr Nana Kwabena Boakye-Boampong, Director of the Ghana Maritime Authority, stated: "Ghana is proud to announce that we have ratified ILO Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188). Prior to the ratification, we have been taking proactive steps to apply the Convention. This ratification cements our commitment to promoting decent work in the fishing sector, including the elimination of forced labour. It also provides us with international recognition for our significant efforts to protect and promote sustainability in the fishing sector."

Convention No. 188 revised and brought up-to-date in an integrated manner most of the existing ILO fishing instruments. The Convention provides a modern and flexible regulatory framework that covers both large fishing operations and small-scale fishery. Moreover, it seeks to ensure that fishers enjoy decent conditions of work on fishing vessels, by establishing minimum requirements for work on board, condition of service, accommodation and food, occupational safety and health protection, medical care and social security.

The Convention will enter into force for Ghana on 28 August 2025.
