EU-India migration corridor: talent mobility seminar

On 14 and 15 June, the ILO India Office, in partnership with the India Centre for Migration (ICM), organized a seminar on talent mobility between the EU and India. The seminar was organized as part of the India EU Cooperation and Dialogue on Migration and Mobility (CDMM) project, which is funded by the EU and implemented by ILO India and International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
The seminar followed the discussions on talent mobility initiated through the last employers’ meeting held in Brussels in October 2018. This seminar aimed at diving deep into the challenges and good practices on talent mobility specific to the information technology and automotive sectors, and start-ups.
The EU Delegation to India and the Ministry of External Affairs of India actively participated to this seminar, which was attended by more than 200 private sector stakeholders including several Indian ministries, EU Member States such as Finland and Estonia and bilateral business chambers in India.
Benoit Sauveroche, First Counsellor of the EU Delegation to India, said: “This conference highlighted a lot of success stories as well as concerns. While working on migration we need to put all the concerns into perspective, taking into consideration the bigger picture of migration. Governments need to have tools to access the legitimacy of the requests to ensure safe and orderly migration and mobility.”
Representatives from the private sector underlined the need for a human-centred agenda for the future of work. In their closing remarks, the government representatives acknowledged that the ideas coming from this seminar will feed administrative reviews and policy orientations.
Indian and EU employers and businesses are critical stakeholders to this project in promoting the business case of migration and advocating for a better recognition of the mutual benefits of talent mobility to the Indian and EU policymakers.
The India-EU CDMM project aims to offer technical assistance in the implementation of India EU Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility. Sustained dialogue among private and government stakeholders, through a series of such seminars, research and knowledge exchange activities is expected to drive progress towards this objective.
The insights from this seminar will contribute to an upcoming seminar on ‘Sharing of good practices on migration governance’, which will take place on 10 July 2019 in New Delhi, followed by the inter-ministerial India EU High Level Dialogue on Migration and Mobility on 11 July 2019.
