Conference on the reflection of the ILO's normative work in the Spanish legal system

MADRID (ILO News) - During the conference, several of the co-authors of the book "La influencia de los convenios y recomendaciones de la OIT en la legislación social española", recently published by the Editorial of the Boletín Oficial del Estado, presented their studies and research, highlighting the great influence that the ILO conventions and recommendations have had and continue to have on the regulations governing labor and social security matters in Spain. The book, which has counted with the participation of 33 co-authors, most of them belonging to the academia but also several ILO officials and ex-officials, has been directed by Professor Joaquín García Murcia.

The director of the ILO office for Spain, Félix Peinado, in his inaugural speech, highlighted the relevance of this conference and this publication to deepen the knowledge of the appreciable influence of ILO standards on Spanish social legislation throughout the more than 105 years of the ILO's existence; This influence is also evident in recent standards implemented or adapted on the occasion of Spain's ratification of new ILO Conventions on various topics such as maritime labor, forced labor, telecommuting, fishing, domestic work and occupational safety and health, with psychosocial risks and the approach to violence and harassment at work as the next challenges following the ratification of Convention 190. The director also underlined and thanked the Complutense University for its decision to join the Global Coalition for Social Justice promoted by the ILO Director General, Gilbert F. Houngbo.

During the day, and within the framework of interesting debates, the importance of the work of regular monitoring of ILO standards was emphasized, with periodic reviews of ratified and non-ratified ILO conventions, as well as the mechanisms for complaints and claims. The documents generated in the reports submitted to the ILO and the comments of the Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations also provide very relevant information on the influence of the ILO on Spanish labor standards, policies and institutions.
