Child labour tops agenda of Kyrgyz parliamentary committee’s session
Following the education forum held in December 2012 with some parliamentarians participating, the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Kyrgyzstan in close cooperation with the the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO-IPEC) mainstreamed child labour concerns into the agenda of the regular meeting of the parliament’s Committee on Education, Culture, Science, Information and Religious Policy held on April 16.

The meeting brought together parliamentarians, representatives of relevant ministries, the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Kyrgyzstan, civil society, international organizations and the media.
ILO-IPEC National Project Coordinator Amina Kurbanova made a short presentation of the main findings, outcomes and recommendations the project had achieved in improving an access of working children to education.
Parliamentarians stressed importance of the issue on the agenda and its relevancy to the Republic’s Education Development Strategy for 2012-2020.
Participants agreed to hold a joint meeting of the Committee on Social Policy and the Committee on Education to discuss child labour related problems and the status of the national response.
