Angola joins the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended

The Government of Angola ratified the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006), marking its commitment towards the improvement of working and living conditions for seafarers.

Angola became the 111th ILO Member State to ratify the Convention. It is the 28th country in Africa to commit to this landmark instrument, often described as the “fourth pillar” of the international maritime regulatory framework, alongside key conventions adopted by the International Maritime Organization.

Angola’s ratification is expected to promote decent work across its maritime sector, which plays a strategic role in the country’s economy and regional connectivity. Shaped by the country’s long Atlantic coastline, the sector supports international trade through key ports, while also serving the offshore oil and gas industry.

The MLC, 2006 will enter into force for Angola on 11 June 2026, one year after its ratification.
