From self-taught to certified: Kenya's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) awards over 600 certificates

This video highlights the launch and impact of Kenya’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative, which offers formal certification for skills acquired through informal work. With 80-90% of Kenyans relying on the informal sector, many are self-taught or learn skills on the job, but lack formal recognition. The RPL program, supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO), aims to bridge this gap by awarding certificates that are recognized both locally and internationally.

Key partners such as the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA, are committed to supporting RPL's integration into the country's education and training policies. Over 600 candidates received full and partial qualifications across multiple sectors, including refugees who participated in the program. These certifications offer new career opportunities, job security, and recognition, helping individuals access better jobs, both within Kenya and globally. A particularly inspiring story is shared by a candidate who now aspires to become a university lecturer in cosmetology, thanks to their formal certification.
