BEIRUT, Lebanon (ILO News) – At just 26 years old, Marwan Al-Rashidi is not only chasing a career – he’s answering a calling.
Born and raised in Lebanon, Marwan always saw nursing as more than a job. “Nursing is a humanitarian vocation before being a material one,” he explains with conviction. In a country facing ongoing challenges in both its health and employment sectors, his words carry weight.
Marwan is currently participating in a work-based learning programme at a local hospital, where he is acquiring both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. “This opportunity gave me access to real hospital training – something I couldn’t afford or access before,” he says. “It’s helping me build a career with dignity and serve my community in a meaningful way.”
This training is part of the Work-Based Learning (WBL) project under the EU-funded ENABLE Programme, implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the SAFADI Foundation. The initiative is designed to equip young people across Lebanon with practical, in-demand skills that match the needs of local labour markets – particularly in sectors essential to community well-being, such as healthcare.
By combining classroom instruction with on-the-job training, the programme combines technical instruction with on-the-job training in professional environments, preparing participants not only to find employment, but to excel in it. It also supports employers by helping build a pipeline of trained, motivated workers ready to contribute.
Healthcare trainers and professionals leading the programme have observed a growing sense of commitment among trainees. “These young people are not just learning procedures – they’re learning to care,” says one instructor.
Marwan’s experience illustrates how targeted skills development can promote decent work, restore hope, and strengthen essential public services. As he looks ahead, he sees more than a job – he sees a future rooted in purpose and service.
