JCI and ILO—Preparation Meeting for the Chemicals Sector Skills Council Launch

Amman, Jordan - December 9th, 2018 -The first meeting of the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for chemical industries was held at the Jordan’s Chamber of Industry (JCI), in the presence of the ILO, the representative of the Chemicals Sector at JCI, Mr. Ahmad Al Bess; as well as other representatives from the Ministry of Labour, the Workers’ Union, the Center of Accreditation and Quality Assurance and leaders of the chemical industry were also in attendance.

The ILO began the meeting by a presentation of the national SSCs and their Terms of Reference (ToR) to the audience, outlining their objectives, membership rules, governance and work plans. Suggested outcomes of the work of the SSCs were thereafter discussed, which included conducting studies to identify the skills and strategies needed at the sectoral level, holding awareness sessions and developing policy papers to disseminate research outcomes and recommendations on training and apprenticeship in Jordan.

The ILO recommended the consideration of a memorandum of understanding to be signed between the SSCs and selected educational institutions and training centers. It also suggested establishing collaboration with other regional and international SSCs from the same field.

The session concluded with the attendees’ election of Mr. Al Bess as the Chairperson of the Chemicals SSC; of Mr. Khaled Al Zyoud from the General Federation for Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) as the Chair Deputy; and of Mr. Ameed Al Abed as the Treasurer.
