Computer simulator for managing a vocational education institution in the Republic of Armenia

Yerevan, Armenia - 5-6 August, 2020 - Within the framework of the project "Applying the G20 Training Strategy: A partnership of the ILO and the Russian Federation" project, a team of Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO completed a series of computer simulator-based training sessions for managers of VET institutions in the Republic of Armenia.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the format of the sessions was redesigned and transferred into a digital educational setup. Thanks to digital tools, it was possible to attract a larger number of participants – representatives of regional VET institutions.
The SKOLKOVO team ran the training session for trainers-moderators from Armenia at the first stage. Twenty moderators will further provide the simulator as one of the tools built into the retraining programs of the National Center for the Development of Vocational Education and Training of the Republic of Armenia.
Olga Shakuro, Project Manager (SKOLKOVO): “The simulator reproduces all the main aspects of VET institution's processes and demonstrates the influence of internal and external factors on the organization development. It was important for us not only to involve moderators in the technical aspects of the simulator, but also to help revise their understanding of the structure of a modern VET institution as a whole".
The second stage was conducted in the form of training for the participants – managers of Armenian VET institutions. Eleven local moderators provided consulting and organizational support for the participants.
Petr Tutaev, Head of the educational computer simulator development team (SKOLKOVO): “Our training sessions are based on the computer simulator - gamified tool that allows to train management skills in a virtual risk-free environment. Events were held in an online format, nevertheless the involvement of the participants, dynamics and drive were the same as in the face-to-face atmosphere. During the second stage training we passed 5 virtual years of college development and saw results of managers’ decisions. Many of the participants highlighted the importance of analyzing the external environment and labor market requirements, building relationships with partners, focusing on student needs, as well as teamwork of the college team leaders”.
The training covered representatives of more than 70 institutions, which were organized into 12 teams - 12 virtual VET institutions. The participantsplayed five rounds of the symulator, developing their virtual organizations.
The G20TS National Project Coordinator for Armenia noted: “The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia emphasizes the relevance of the implementation of this Project in the TVET system within the framework of the innovative educational technologies application, as well as improving the management efficiency of VET institutions".

Training sessions are expected to be carried out by national moderators in the face-to-face format after the removal of all restrictions existed in connection with the epidemiological situation.We solved problems that had not been solved for years in only a few hours!
