Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
Business Eswatini leads the way in Environmental Social and Governance
18 September 2025
MBABANE, Eswatini (ILO News) -Expectations for businesses to improve their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance have increased significantly in recent years, driven by both national and international regulations. For Swati companies, these developments have direct implications, especially for those engaged in trade with EU companies. Business Eswatini (BE) has taken a pioneering step by participating in an ESG Training of Trainers (ToT) followed by an Awareness Session with its members as well as the official launch of the ESG State of Play in Eswatini report.
With technical support from the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) and ILO’s Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT/EMP), this programme equips businesses with practical tools to enhance their capacities for responsible business practices.
Following BE’s participation in the ILO-led Training of Trainers (ToT) programme held in Mbabane from 16–17 September 2025, the organisation swiftly applied the learning on home ground. Just a day later, on 18 September 2025, BE hosted an ESG Awareness Session attended by representatives from 20 enterprises across eight economic sectors. During the session, BE presented the business case for ESG integration and officially announced the launch of its ESG training service, set to begin in January 2026.
In a landmark moment, BE also unveiled the ESG State of Play in Eswatini report — the first of its kind in the Kingdom. This evidence-based report marks a significant step toward equipping businesses with the insights and tools needed to operate responsibly and competitively in the 21st-century economy. It offers a critical assessment of current sustainability practices while positioning ESG integration as a strategic imperative — essential for future-proofing businesses and meeting the evolving expectations of investors, workers, and consumers alike.
Business Eswatini CEO, Mr. E. Nathi Dlamini, highlighted that the global shift toward greater accountability is reshaping how businesses operate. He noted that companies which align competitiveness with sustainability not only reduce their exposure to risk but also position themselves to seize new opportunities in trade and investment. The CEO further underscored Environmental, Social, and Governance as the language of business and the foundation for sustainable prosperity in Eswatini.
By spearheading this initiative, Business Eswatini demonstrates its leadership in driving responsible business practices and sets a new standard for employer organizations in the region.
