Climate Cocoa Project: Results at a Glance

The strengthening resilience to climate change for the elimination of child labour in cocoa producing areas in Ghana project (Climate Cocoa Project) supported cocoa-growing communities in Ghana to eliminate child labour while strengthening resilience to climate change. Through the Child Labour-Free Zones approach and the promotion of biochar, a climate-smart technology that improves soil fertility and boosts yields, the project addressed the root causes of child labour by improving livelihoods, strengthening child protection systems and enhancing access to education.

Implemented by the International Labour Organization in collaboration with national and local partners, the project combined social justice and climate action. It strengthened community-based child protection mechanisms, improved school infrastructure and attendance, trained farmers in sustainable practices and documented guidance on greenhouse gas reduction and carbon financing. The project demonstrates how decent work, child protection and environmental sustainability can advance together in Ghana’s cocoa sector.
