Work in Freedom

In support of Jordan’s national policies to protect migrant workers, the ILO is managing several projects in Jordan related to labour migration and human trafficking. One of these is the “Work in Freedom” programme that aims to reduce vulnerability to forced labour within the labour migration context of South Asia and the Middle East with a particular focus on women in the garment sector and domestic work. The programme in Jordan focuses on three streams of work linking countries of origin with countries of destination.

Objectives

• Ensuring fair recruitment of migrant workers;
• organizing migrant garment and domestic workers at destination; and
• law and policy advocacy.

Activities

• Developing fair recruitment corridors with countries of origin;
• strengthening the voice of women migrant workers in worker organizations’;
• reviewing the 2009 Anti-human trafficking law; the Anti-Human Trafficking Technical committee to update the National Strategy To Combat Trafficking In Persons and policy roundtable discussion for anti trafficking stakeholders on forced labour;
• identify decriminalization measures with specific reference to domestic and garment workers.

Outcomes

• Women migrant workers and girls are empowered;
• recruitment agencies adopt ethical practices and are subject to improved monitoring and enforcement by state authorities;
• workplace practices and support services to safeguard the rights of women and girls are improved;
• laws and policies to protect women migrant workers and girls are in place and implemented; and
• new and better evidence on labour trafficking of women & girls within and from South Asia and on effective preventive measures is available.
