Webinar on Advancing Quality Apprenticeships in Africa through ILO Recommendation No. 208

This webinar is being organized by the African Union Commission and the ILO. It includes the participation of representatives of government, and employers’ and workers’ organizations from Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Africa, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia.

Apprenticeships are a critical pathway for young people to transition into decent work. In Africa, youth unemployment and informality remain high, and skills mismatches are persistent. Quality apprenticeships - when well regulated, inclusive, and responsive to labour market needs - can bridge this gap.

ILO’s Quality Apprenticeships Recommendation, 2023, (R208) provides a global normative framework for strengthening apprenticeships. Simultaneously, the African Union’s (AU) Continental TVET Strategy (2022–2030) calls for a paradigm shift towards demand-driven, work-based learning and stronger public-private partnerships. This webinar aims to raise awareness about R208, share good practices from its application in Africa, and explore how it can support implementation of the AU’s Continental TVET strategy and the AU/ILO Youth Employment Strategy (YES-Africa) at national and regional levels.
