A safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right: the Latin America and the Caribbean perspective
Representatives of governments and employers' and workers' organizations have been convened by the ILO Regional Office to discuss the challenges of occupational safety and health, including the ratification of two fundamental ILO Conventions.
Lima - The ILO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean invites to connect this Monday 15 May to a virtual tripartite conversation about the recent inclusion of the safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right, and to discuss about Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) challenges in the region.
Representatives of governments and employers' and workers' organizations from various countries in the region have been convened to exchange views. The meeting is scheduled for 10:00 Lima time (09:00 Mexico City and San José, 10:00 Kingston, Bogotá and Quito, 11:00 Port of Spain, Santiago and Asunción, 12:00 Brasilia and Buenos Aires, 15:00 GMT).

This landmark decision was the outcome of a process that formally began in 2019, when the Conference recognized, through the ILO Century Declaration for the Future of Work, that "safe and healthy working conditions are fundamental to decent work" and requested the ILO Governing Body, in the accompanying resolution on the ILO Century Declaration for the Future of Work, to "consider, as soon as possible, proposals to include safe and healthy working conditions in the ILO framework of fundamental principles and rights at work".
The International Labour Conference also decided to attribute to the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) the status of fundamental Conventions embodying the new category of fundamental principles and rights at work.

Context

- To promote the advancement of OSH at regional level
- To promote the exchange of OSH experiences and good practice
- Raise the importance of ratifying the core OSH Conventions.
