Launch of an AI-based grievance mechanism for the garment, footwear and palm oil sectors

Background, Objective and Output

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has received support from the Employment and Social Development of the Government of Canada to implement the Realizing trade gains free from gender discrimination and child labour (RealGains) Project in Indonesia. The project aims to strengthen the enabling environment for trade and investment in selected export sectors by addressing persistent FPRW deficits, particularly regarding gender-based discrimination and child labour. It will be implemented from March 2025 to February 2028 and cover sectors of footwear, palm-oil, and lithium battery production in Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan.

The ILO is also developing applications on grievance mechanisms for trade union federations in the Palm Oil sector to strengthen workers' protection and address FPRW deficits. The project has resumed its development with broad support from all involved parties, including the ILO SIRI Project, which developed a grievance mechanism application for the garment sector. The RealGains Project plans to expand the application to the footwear sector in 2025, incorporating AI-powered features for case categorization and engaging stakeholders in endorsing and supporting the implementation of these grievance systems.

The launching event will result in the formal introduction and dissemination of two grievance mechanism applications: the grievance mechanism application and the upgraded grievance mechanism application. The visibility generated through the launch is expected to facilitate broader advocacy and uptake of the systems by workers and their organizations, contributing to improved capacity for dispute resolution and better protection of workers' rights in the palm oil and footwear sectors.

Participants

The Grievance App's launch will take place in Jakarta (onsite). About 200 people are invited, representing ministries, the Canadian Embassy, employers' associations, trade unions, non-governmental organizations, foundation, and ILO-related projects.
