Introduction

This workshop marks the beginning of a subnational training program aimed at enhancing gender-responsive fair recruitment and inspection practices to better protect Indonesian migrant workers. It is part of the broader EU-funded PROTECT program (2024-2026), implemented by the ILO, UN Women, UNICEF, and UNODC, focusing on reducing vulnerabilities for women and children in Southeast Asia.

Background

Indonesian women make up 61% of the country's migrant workers, primarily employed in domestic work, which often lacks legal protection. These workers face significant risks, including violence, trafficking, and exploitation. The workshop aims to address these issues by promoting fair recruitment practices and improving labour inspection systems.

Objectives

  • Knowledge Enhancement: Educate 100 participants (40% women) from various sectors about the gaps in fair and gender-responsive recruitment policies and practices.
  • Experience Sharing: Facilitate the exchange of best practices and experiences related to fair recruitment and gender-responsive support services.
  • Action Plan Development: Create recommendations and joint work plans to strengthen governance and protection for Indonesian migrant workers, especially women, in the Indonesia-Malaysia corridor.

Target Participants

The workshop will host 100 participants, including government officials, labour inspectors, union representatives, CSOs, private placement agencies, UN agencies, embassies, and media.
