Contributions to sustaining peace since 2016: evaluating progress and future directions

This event will bring together experts from the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Organization for Migration (IOM), Interpeace, Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), and World Health Organization (WHO).

The discussion will focus on the UN’s Sustaining Peace agenda, which emphasizes a comprehensive and preventative strategy to address the root causes of conflict, promote inclusive political processes, and foster sustainable development. As the 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review (PBAR) approaches, the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus approach is expected to play a crucial role in addressing complex crises. This approach integrates emergency relief, long-term development, and peacebuilding efforts to prevent conflict and strengthen resilience.

By linking immediate relief with broader strategies for sustainable peace, the HDP nexus offers a holistic approach to conflict prevention and resolution, aligning with the UN’s vision of “sustaining peace” as outlined in the twin resolutions. The roundtable will highlight the efforts made by UN funds, agencies, and programs to support sustaining peace and integrate the HDP nexus approach.

Selected speakers from various UN agencies will share lessons learned, identify ongoing challenges, and engage with participants to gather insights on the role of joint collaboration and strategic planning in sustaining peace. This event aims to foster a collaborative environment to reflect on past achievements and explore future directions in peacebuilding.
