National Artisanal Small-scale Gold Mining Summit

5th National Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Summit

The International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with Ban Toxics will hold a national ASGM summit that will bring together local stakeholders on ASGM in the Philippines. The event will include a study launch, presentations and discussions on ASGM and the gold supply chain and will highlight the voices of child labourers and miners.

ILO as supported by USDOL and in partnership with Ban Toxics is implementing the CARING-Gold Mining Project that aims to convene stakeholders to implement and develop strategies to reduce child labour and improve working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). To achieve this goal, Ban Toxics will hold the 5th National ASGM Summit from 27 to 28 September 2018 that will be one of the venues for stakeholder discussions and reflections on child labour and working conditions in ASGM.

During the event, the Baseline Study on ASGM and gold supply chain will be launched describing child labour and working conditions in ASGM as well as the gold supply chain in the Philippines involving project sites Camarines Norte and South Cotabato. The Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Occupational Safety and Health study will also be presented along with ILO, BAN Toxics and government partners’ approaches in addressing child labour and unsafe working conditions in the country. Other ASGM models and good practices in covered sites will also be featured to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of actions and efforts in ASGM.

An open forum with the government officials and mining associations will be facilitated to encourage dialogue and generate agreements. Ways of moving forward, such as the use of mercury-free technology, proposal for just transition in mining communities and declarations on the formation of network of mining unions and workers’ representatives will lastly be given emphasis in the summit.
