The impact of COVID-19 in Myanmar: a study of income loss of workers in the garment sector

Myanmar garment sector, a major contributor to jobs and livelihoods for the country, has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study, conducted with funding support from Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), provides insights into the vulnerabilities of the secotr, the production uncertainties factories faced, the consequences of COVID-19 on the worker’s incomes and working hours. It also illustrates the vital role that collaboration among international brands, suppliers, employers and unions can play in finding win-win solutions to protect the livelihoods of employers and workers.
