Programme of events in the Just Transition Pavilion

  • 10:00-11:00 - Growing just futures in agriculture: bridging climate action, food security and biodiversity
    • This KCI event, organized in partnership with Climate Strategies, will explore how leveraging impact assessments of mitigation actions can enable just transitions and inclusive economic diversification for the agricultural sector, while also discussing potential strategies to strengthen food security and protect biodiversity. The discussion will draw from evidence-based insights and recent research on the impacts of the implementation of response measures in the agricultural sector, including from an ongoing case study research commissioned by the KCI. This aims to be a constructive dialogue sparking transformative ideas on how mitigation action can align with and accelerate just transitions in the agricultural sector.
  • 11:30-12:30 - Indigenous peoples and the JTWP: addressing the impacts of mining for the energy transition
    • Activities under the JTWP must respect Indigenous Peoples’ rights to Self-determination and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). As countries reconfigure their economies, energy systems, and mobility infrastructure, a new wave of extractivism, driven by demand for minerals and renewable energy projects are encroaching on Indigenous Peoples lands, often without their consent. This threatens their rights, livelihoods, and cultures, as well as the integrity of the ecosystems they protect.
  • 13:00-14:00 - Policy lab - regional dialogues in Latin America and the Caribbean: integrating just transition in the design and implementation of NDC 3.0
    • This event will take place as a session of the Just Transition Policy Lab, an integrated part of the Just Transition Pavilion designed to enable governments and social partners to share firsthand experiences on how to implement just transitions and the lessons learned in the process. At a strategic moment for Latin America and the Caribbean, the update of NDC 3.0 provides a decisive opportunity to ensure that climate action incorporates just transition into policy frameworks, guaranteeing that the benefits of decarbonization reach workers, enterprises, and communities, particularly those facing the greatest vulnerability to climate impacts. With social dialogue and inclusive participation at its core, the session will be structured around three essential dimensions for advancing resilient and low-carbon economies.
  • 14:30-15:30 - From compass to action: legislating just transitions
    • The event will present the Just Transition Compass, developed with the support of the COP30 Presidency, as a starting point to discuss how Latin American legislators can advance just transition implementation. It will feature a tripartite dialogue among legislators, employers, and employees on governance frameworks for just transitions and explore how legislative action can be linked to the UNFCCC process, aligning climate ambition with social justice.
  • 16:00-17:00 - Enhancing social partnership for effective implementation of just transition in Nigeria
    • This event brings perspectives on and actions of social partners fostering synergy to work towards delivering on just transition policy initiatives in Nigeria.

  • 10:00-11:00 - Follow-up to the dialogue on just transition and indigenous peoples: a Latin American perspective
    • This discussion will follow up on the Global Dialogue on Just Transition and Indigenous Peoples (2024), which emanated from the Inernational Labour Conference discussion and Conclusions on a Just Transition to Environmentally Sustainable Economies and Societies for All (2023) and highlight the transition to formality within a just transition, access to education and vocational training, indigenous peoples' business initiatives, and the obligation to ensure consultation and participation within the framework of Convention No. 169.
  • 11:30-12:30 - Labour migration and climate change
    • While education and vocational training programmes for green skills are a policy priority, seeing the effects of these changes on the labour market takes time. Considering the fast-paced technological changes that underpin green jobs and the urgency of the climate crisis, there is no time for governments to wait for the skills development of the local labour market to address the green skills gap. Experiences and analysis show that relying on training alone is not sufficient to address skills shortages in many countries. In the Latin America and Caribbean region there is a strong potential and need to draw upon skilled migrant workers to support the green transition – both to fill the immediate skills gap, as well as using the migrant workers to upskill and train the local workforce to ensure a sustainable and long-term transformation of the economy. This event will showcase a recently launched report analysis policies and business needs for labour migration and green skills in the LAC region with regional stakeholders discussing recommendations and challenges. The paper analyzes whether immigration frameworks are adapted to labour market needs to ensure that  economies have the skills necessary to ensure the transition to low-carbon economies.
  • 14:30-15:30 - From vision to practice: putting just transition into action in the Global South
    • Workers, communities, and other local actors across coal regions in the Global South are advancing just transitions in many ways. This event showcases initiatives supported by the IKI JET project, including stakeholder engagement forums, innovation labs for economic diversification, skills trainings, development of mine closure and JET plans, and ways that strengthen awareness of workers and local communities and their capacity to participate in formal processes.”

  • 10:00-11:00 - Prioritising people: how COP30 can break new ground on just transition in the global climate regime
    • This event will highlight regional practices and visions for a just transition, including Europe and South East Asia, while addressing differences, limitations, and the need for stronger international cooperation. It will consider gender equality and global equity, assess progress toward establishing a just transition mechanism at COP30, and serve as a platform to build support for coordinated, cross-sectoral, and cross-country action.
  • 11:30-12:30 - Policy lab - Protection for equality: just transition and resilience for women in Latin America and the Caribbean
    • The session will explore how to turn climate challenges into sustainable opportunities for women by integrating a gender perspective into labor and climate policies, and by promoting decent work, productive innovation, and access to social protection in the transition toward low-carbon economies. Representatives from different countries will share experiences on policies and programs that promote women’s economic empowerment in the face of climate risks. The session will also encourage audience interaction to foster peer learning. Additionally, it will feature the regional launch of the study “Just Transition and Gender”, presenting practical examples and replicable solutions for the region.
  • 13:00-14:00 - Brazil’s lead: regenerative agriculture and fair trade for a just global food system
    • This session explores Brazil’s leadership in advancing regenerative agriculture and fair trade as pillars of a just and sustainable global food system. The discussion will highlight cooperation between Brazil and the EU in promoting inclusive agribusiness, equitable value chains, and credible climate action that supports both environmental integrity and rural livelihoods.
  • 14:30-15:30 - Winning big for Just Transition
    • Trade unions, women and gender organsations, indigenous peoples, youth and environmental organisations demand a strong outcome on Just Transition and will evaluate where the negotiations are.

  • 10:00-11:00 - Just transition towards zero deforestation: promoting decent work and sustainable agri-food systems
    • Agri-food systems contribute around 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with up to 90% of tropical deforestation linked to agricultural expansion. This not only reduces carbon absorption but also threatens biodiversity, displaces rural and Indigenous communities, and perpetuates precarious labor. In Mexico, a new program seeks to promote deforestation-free agro-exports, starting with avocado, ensuring compliance with labor, environmental, and sanitary standards for a just rural transition.
  • 13:00-14:00 - Policy lab – Youth-led pathways for a just transition: skills, jobs, gender and social inclusion in Bangladesh
    • Organized by the Government of Bangladesh, YouthNet Global and the ILO, this Policy Lab explores how youth-led initiatives can drive decent, climate-resilient jobs in renewable energy, agroecology, ecosystem restoration, waste management, and nature-based solutions. These opportunities will not emerge automatically; they require skills development, inclusive policies, and fair labor conditions to ensure youth, women, and climate-impacted communities can fully participate. The session will showcase youth-led initiatives from across Bangladesh highlighting gender-transformative pathways and locally driven innovations. Participants will co-create practical recommendations to scale youth-led solutions, strengthen green economy skills, and embed inclusion into national Just Transition strategies and NDC 3.0 implement plan.
  • 14:30-15:30 - Just transition to green economy: voices from Tapajós gold supply chain
    • Gold fever continues to drive millions into the Amazon in search of opportunities, yet many end up trapped in exploitation and abuse. In Pará’s Tapajós region, where 40% of miners are at risk of trafficking for forced labor, UNODC works with government, universities, and local communities to foster alternative livelihoods. The initiative advances a just transition from illicit mining to sustainable economies that keep the forest standing, leaving no one behind.
  • 16:00-17:00 - Empowering youth for a just transition in Somalia
    • This event explores how youth-led climate action in Somalia can create green jobs, strengthen resilience, and advance a just transition. It highlights innovative approaches to align national climate goals with employment opportunities for young people, linking directly to the theme of job creation through climate action.
