The world of work is undergoing a major process of change. There are several forces which affect way of work and paradigm of society. Making the 100th anniversary of the foundation in 2019, ILO will offer opportunities for debating on how its mandate for realizing social justice be achieved.
Taking advantage of Ms. André’s visit to Japan, ILO Office for Japan organized her lecture meeting on Future of Work.

Maria Helena André, Director, Bureau for Workers’ Activities, ILO
Maria Helena André is Director of the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) as from 1st September 2013. Before joining the ILO, Maria Helena André held the following occupations and functions:
June 2011-August 2013 - Member of the Portuguese Parliament. Member of four Parliamentary committees: European Affairs; Social Security and Labour; Monitoring of the implementation of the programme signed between the Portuguese Government and the International Troika (European Commission, ECB and IMF); Enquiry Committee on Swaps.
October 2009-June 2011 - Minister of Labour and Social Security of the 18th Constitutional Government of Portugal: Governmental functions in the areas of labour market policies, labour law, vocational education and training, social protection and social security.
May 2003-October 2009 - Deputy General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in Brussels, Belgium: Responsible for the European Social Dialogue, European Social Policy, Youth Affairs.
January 1992-April 2003 - Confederal Secretary of the ETUC, in Brussels, Belgium: Responsible for Labour Market Policy, Vocational Education and Training, Regional Policy and Interregional Trade Union Committees, Social Exclusion, Racism and Xenophobia, Youth policies. Development, discussion and adoption of European trade union policies in the different policy fields Coordination of various working groups composed by representatives from the national trade union confederations and European industry federations affiliated to the ETUC.
September 1988-December 1991 - Head of the General Workers’ Union of Portugal (UGT), International Affairs Department: Responsible for the coordination of the European and International Relations of UGT.
September 1981-August 1988 - Assistant at UGT International Affairs Department: Assistant to the head of UGT International Relations Department.
Maria Helena André was born on 29 October 1960 in Portugal. She studied Modern Languages and Literature (English/German) at the Faculty of Arts (University of Lisbon). Her mother tongue is Portuguese and she speaks fluent English, French and Spanish.
