Updates: Employment through Labour Intensive Infrastructure in Jordan

Resumption of work

Phases 3 and 4 have restarted and it is hoped that the site work will be complete by February 2021. This will allow a smooth transition to the site work of Phase 5 – more road maintenance and Municipality cleaning – to start in February and March 2021.

In the meantime a range of training, advocacy and monitoring activities are underway to ensure that the site work is carried out well and that the benefits are well publicised. Training is currently being planned for professional engineers, safety supervisors and unskilled workers.

Gender awareness training in Jordan
Dates: August 26-August 27, 2020 & August 31-September 1, 2020

The ILO’s Employment Intensive Infrastructure Programme in Jordan held awareness raising sessions on gender inclusion for representatives of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the Ministry of Local Administration, contractors and municipality staff, as part of continued efforts to promote gender equality and participation in the programme.

The training equipped participants with introductory knowledge and tools to mainstream gender effectively through their work such as through raising awareness in their communities, dealing with job applications and recruitment, and ensuring a fair and equal division of work between men and women in the field.

The training also focused on ways to ensure a decent and safe working environment for workers, in particularly women. It also allowed participants to hold discussions on the importance of having a gender friendly work environment that enables women to balance their domestic and care responsibilities with paid work outside of their homes and challenges which hinder women’s participation in the labour market, such as lack of adequate and safe transportation, lack of childcare, and long working hours.

A total of 35 participations took part in the training, which was held through two separate sessions in line with COVID-19 social distancing and safety measures and guidelines.
