Radiant Insurance Company: Providing agriculture and livestock insurance

The ILO works with Radiant Insurance Company in Rwanda to grow the reach and scale of Rwanda’s existing national agricultural insurance scheme.

Radiant is a member of the national agricultural insurance scheme funded by the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources. The government provides 40 per cent subsidy of premiums. Radiant is a leading insurer in the scheme and covers 60 per cent of the members. The pilot focuses on expanding the scheme to cover more farmers and livestock.

Pilot objectives

  • Grow the reach and scale of the existing national agricultural insurance scheme
  • Improve the resilience of value chain actors in the agriculture production of selected crops and livestock
  • Build an insurance culture among smallholder farmers

Pilot activities

  • Product development for insurance to cater to additional livestock and crop value chains, such as beans, soybeans, cassava, coffee, tea, and aquaculture
  • Capacity building of staff and field officers for designing and distributing crop and livestock insurance
  • Education campaigns to build awareness of agricultural insurance-based amongst consumers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector
  • Technology implementation to reduce operational costs and improve fraud detection
