Combating the worst forms of child labour - A project of the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean and the Government of Canada

Pilot action programmes on child labour are models of intervention aimed at the elimination and prevention of child labour. They have emerged from global research into child labour, its causes, consequences and manifestations. Based on in-depth research and analysis, these programmes attempt to intervene at the level of the child, household and community to provide alternative developmental paths, build awareness and support and empower children and families to take charge of their lives.
Action programmes are being implemented in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe. With the technical and financial support provided by IPEC/ILO, these pilot programmes provide Governments and other stakeholders with a practical model that could be evaluated as to its effectiveness in the fight against child labour. Action programmes include:
In the Caribbean, pilot action programmes to prevent and eliminate child labour are being implemented in Belize, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Baseline surveys and rapid assessment studies conducted during 2002-2004 guided the design of these pilot programmes.
Action programmes are being implemented in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe. - activities to withdraw and rehabilitate child labourers,
- counselling, academic or other support to siblings to prevent them from also engaging in child labour,
- training and counselling for parents/guardians of child labourers to help improve income generating skills and
- awareness-raising activities in communities in which child labour is prevalent.
