Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling and Decent Work in Pakistan

The Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling and Decent Work (SENSREC-DW) project supports Pakistan’s efforts to implement safe, rights-based, and environmentally responsible ship recycling practices in line with the Hong Kong Convention and ILO labour standards. Following Pakistan’s ratification of the HKC, the project aims to strengthen legal frameworks, enhance occupational safety and health, and improve hazardous waste management in the shipbreaking sector—particularly at Gadani yard in Balochistan. Jointly implemented by the ILO and IMO with funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative promotes sustainable industry upgrading while safeguarding workers’ rights and environmental integrity.
