Community-led awareness and monitoring to eliminate child labour - The COTU-Kenya model

This document presents a good practice implemented by the Central Organization of Trade Unions–Kenya (COTU-K) and its affiliates to prevent and eliminate child labour in high-risk sectors such as sugarcane, tea, coffee, and domestic work. Through a dual approach of community awareness and structured monitoring, the initiative mobilized local stakeholders—including trade unions, teachers, religious leaders, and former child labourers—while establishing Local Child Labour Committees (LCLCs) as grassroots oversight bodies. It features the use of tailored monitoring tools, workplace training, and integration of child protection clauses into CBAs. The document outlines the process, enabling factors, and replicability of this community-anchored model.
