Zambian Government and UN system host 2024 Zambia Social Protection Week
LUSAKA (ILO News) - From 17 to 21 June 2024, the Government through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services and Ministry of Labour and Social Security with support from the United Nations system in Zambia hosted the Sixth edition of the Zambia Social Protection Week. This year’s Zambia Social Protection Week, which was held under the theme: ‘Sustainable Social Protection for Resilience Building’, kick-started with a media breakfast meeting held on 11 June 2024 at Lusaka’s Taj Pamodzi Hotel.

The meeting was attended by three ministers namely, Minister Community Development and Social Services, Hon. Doreen Mwamba, MP, Minister of Labour and Social Security Hon. Brenda Tambatamba, MP and Minister of Youth Sport and Arts Hon. Elvis Nkandu, MP as well as cooperating partners and donors represented by Acting Deputy British High Commissioner Dr. Sam Waldock and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. James Wakaiga, representing the UN Resident Coordinator Ms. Beatrice Mutali.
On 12 June 2024, the community engagement meeting was held at Twashuka ground in Lusaka’s Kanyama Compound. The engagement brought together social protection players who interacted with a good number of beneficiaries and carried out sensitization activities on various social protection programmes within the community.
The Zambia Social Protection Week was also characterised by a series of awareness raising sessions that included: radio, television, face-to-face meetings, and media facility visits, as well as Community engagements.
Others were: Webinars, Facebook discussions and debates by key social protection experts and members of the public on topics such as; shock responsive social protection, national strategy on extension of social security to informal economy workers, building climate-resilient futures, strengthened partnerships towards inclusive, responsive and sustainable social protection, promoting early warning systems and climate resilient agriculture and livelihoods in Zambia among many others.
